Circulation

The library has a lot of circulating items. The loan periods and due dates vary by patron type. To learn more about loan periods, due dates, fees, and more, use the menu below.

Circulation Information

Loan periods for library items are based on borrowing account type and the type of item borrowed. For complete details on loan periods, see our Circulation Policy.

Current students, faculty, and staff can request materials from the Northwestern Libraries in USearch and pick them up at The Styberg Library. Watch this video to learn how.

Additionally, The Styberg Library offers Curbside Pickup for patrons unable to visit the Library during open hours. We also offer Scanning and Mailing Services for online students. These services are also available for those who do not feel comfortable entering the building because of health and safety concerns.

In order to ensure equitable access to library materials, an item you have on loan may be recalled if it is needed by another user or by the library. E-mail notices are sent out immediately when an item has been recalled. Recalled items must be returned within seven (7) days.

The Styberg Library sends out e-mail notices to help keep your account up to date. Item Due notices are e-mailed the day an item is due. Overdue notices are e-mailed one week after the due date has passed. Fine notices are e-mailed on the 30th day after the due date.

If you are not receiving notices, we recommend checking your junk folder. You can also contact the Circulation Desk at 847-866-3909 or styberg.library@garrett.edu to verify your e-mail address.

The Styberg Library does not charge daily overdue fines for most circulating items except for overdue recalled items and short-term loan items.

Items that are not returned or renewed within 30 days after their due date are automatically marked with a “Lost Status” by the library circulation management system. A replacement fee of $125 will be assessed.

Patrons who have lost an item are strongly encouraged to contact styberg.library@garrett.edu to discuss options to provide a replacement copy of a lost item, and thereby avoid paying the full lost item replacement fee.

If an item is returned damaged, fines and fees will apply as determined by Library Staff. If an item you return is found damaged, you will be contacted.

Fines and fees are payable using cash or check Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:30pm at the circulation desk. To pay by credit card or student account (Garrett students only), you must contact The Styberg Library by phone (847-866-3909) or email styberg.library@garrett.edu.

Borrowing privileges will blocked, and you will not be able to check out or renew any more items if you have any overdue recalled items, fines in excess of $100.00, or if you have reached the maximum number of items for your account.

Information about why the account is blocked is available on your MyAccount page. You may also phone the circulation desk at 847-866-3909 or email styberg.library@garrett.edu to check on the status of your account.

Library Accounts are deactivated when a student goes on a leave of absence. All checked out library items should be returned immediately. Accounts will be reactivated when a student re-registers.

Library accounts are closed if a student withdraws from their program or transfers to another institution.

Unpaid bills and fines are reported to the Student Accounts Office at least twice a year and will result in a hold on the student’s account, which may impact registration and/or graduation.

You may also phone the circulation desk at 847-866-3909 or email styberg.library@garrett.edu to check on the status of your account.

All graduating student accounts expire on 5/31 the year of graduation and all checked out library items should be returned before that date. If the account is in good standing, graduates are then eligible for an Alumni Borrowing Card. Please visit the Alum Resources page for more information.
