The Styberg Library, along with Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, remains closed at this time. Our reopening plans are aligned with the Seminary’s Campus Reopening Plan, which is designed to ensure everyone’s utmost safety. We remain committed, however, to serving the academic and research needs of the Seminary community during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The Library staff is returning to work in the Library Monday through Friday from 10 am - 2 pm. Only two staff members are allowed to work per day as a safety precaution, and no students workers are available. This limited return to work will, however, allow the Library to offer curbside pickup/mail of physical book requests, scan physical items, and place interlibrary loan requests. See below under the Physical Resources and Interlibrary Loan sections for updated information about these services.

Physical Resources (Pickup, Mail, or Scan)

While access to the Library itself is still not possible, we will be able to provide access to some of our circulating physical resources through curbside pickup and mail. This service will be initially provided only to current Garrett-Evangelical and Bexley Seabury students, faculty, and staff. To submit item requests for pickup or mail, please see our Curbside Service Request Instructions

If you would like us to mail your requests to you, please note this in the Comment section when you request your items, or use the mail delivery request form. We can only offer this to Garrett-Evangelical and Bexley Seabury patrons who live more than fifty miles away from the Seminary and within the United States. There is a limit of 5 items per person per weekday.

Non-requestable materials, like reserve and reference books, will be eligible for scanning. Scans of print materials (including reserve and reference items) will be provided by Library staff. There is a limit of 5 scan requests per person per week, with a maximum of 100 total pages. Be aware that copyright restrictions still apply. If you need to have chapters scanned, please use this form to submit your request. If you have questions or concerns about this, email us.


All required course books and other physical items will be placed on reserve. These items will not be available for checkout; however, you can request scans from these materials using this form. Copyright restrictions still apply, so we cannot scan entire books or large sections either.

Online Resources

All of our online resources remain available. You can find them directly by searching in USearch and clicking the links within the item records. Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Interlibrary Loan requests will be available beginning the week of July 6th. Requests can be made through the ILL forms on the library website under the “Services” tab.

Styberg Library staff have very limited time in the library, and library services at other libraries are also limited. This means, you can expect a longer than usual turnaround time. Please be assured we will get your materials to you as quickly as possible, but we ask for your patience.

You will be notified when your ILL books arrive, and you will be able to pick them up at the library during curbside pickup hours. ILL books must be picked up by the borrower at the library - we cannot mail them.

Scans of journal articles and chapters of books, which can be delivered electronically, can be filled faster than requests for books.

Currently, all materials are set to renew automatically. You can also manually renew your items through your account. See the USearch Help page for more information. If you cannot renew your books online, please email us.


If you are ready to return your items, including Northwestern and interlibrary loan items, you can place them in the large silver book drop in front of the main building. It is to the left of the main entrance, close to the accessible, ground-level entrance, and it has a Styberg Library logo on it. The bin will be emptied every weekday, and your books will be checked in then. To ensure the safety and wellness of our patrons and staff, the Styberg Library will quarantine all returns before making them available for checkout.

Virtual Study Room

Want to study together while we are apart? For the summer (June 1 to August 28), a Virtual Study Room will be available from 8:30 am until 10:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Visit the Virtual Study Room to connect with classmates and support each other’s study, research, and writing. If desired, the Library can set up a virtual breakout room for individual/group study as well, just email us to request this. We hope that this helps you remain connected during this time of distance and uncertainty.

Staff Availability

Library staff will work physically in the Library Monday through Friday from 10 am - 2 pm to manage requests for scans and curbside service items as well as perform other necessary services.

We remain available via Chat (Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm), phone, email, and Zoom. We will also hold virtual office hours every weekeday from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm & 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the Virtual Study Room.
