Thomas Coke Letters Online

April 2, 2019

Recently, the Styberg Library uploaded its collection of letters from Rev. Dr. Thomas Coke, the first Methodist bishop and father of Methodist missions. The Coke collection includes twenty-eight, fully transcribed letters, dating from 1789 to 1813. Many are written to Rev. Ezekiel Cooper who was a prominent Methodist clergyman in America; however, there are also letters to Rev. Thomas Morrell, Bishop Richard Whatcoat, Rev. William Colbert, and several others. The letters contain personal details about Dr. Coke’s life as well as details about his many missionary journeys. All are digitally available online in the Methodist Manuscripts Collection, which also includes nineteen letters from Revs. John and Charles Wesley. Visit to view them.
